The Coffee Chat
Once someone responds to your cold email with a yes, your next step is the coffee chat, which is a short virtual or in person conversation meant to help you get to know them, their work, and their path. It’s not an interview, and it’s not a formal meeting. It’s just a chance to talk and learn more.
Tips for a Strong Coffee Chat Request
Getting a “yes” is only part one. Make saying yes easy by doing the following:
Be prompt in your responses. If they reply, don’t leave them waiting days for a follow up.
Explain your purpose briefly. In your initial email or follow-up, clearly say why you want to meet
Offer dates and times right away. Say something like “I’m free Monday and Wednesday anytime after 3:00pm.”
Be flexible. Let them know you’re happy to set up a Zoom link, phone call, or meet in person depending on their schedule. You can offer to meet in a coffee shop, outside an academic building, or wherever is easiest for them.
What Should You Ask?
This is your chance to learn. Come prepared with 4–5 questions, but be ready to go with the flow if the conversation shifts. Here are some examples (many of these I’ve asked myself):
Can you tell me more about your role and what a typical day looks like for you?
How did you end up in this field or position?
What experiences during college helped prepare you for where you are now?
Were there any skills or lessons you didn’t expect to need but ended up being really important?
If you were in my position, what would you focus on right now?
Are there any classes, programs, or internships you’d recommend?
What’s one thing you wish you had known earlier in your career?
And always end with this:
"Is there anyone else you think I should talk to who could give me more insight into this field?"
This not only keeps the conversation going beyond that one person, but also expands your network through their connections. Most people are happy to connect you with others if you’ve come across as genuine and thoughtful. Space to Succeed Coffee Chat Template
