Dream Beyond the Blocks: Lemaria Neal’s Mission to Uplift Nottoway

Growing up in Nottoway County, Virginia Lemaria Neal saw too many of her peers fall victim to a cycle of violence, misunderstanding, and limited opportunities. Today, she is changing that cycle; not just for herself but for an entire generation of young people who deserve more. Lemaria is the founder of Dream Beyond the Blocks, an initiative committed to creating safe spaces, mentorship, and hope for youth in her rural community. Her journey, like the mission she champions, is deeply personal.

“I wanted to be a pillar in my community”

From a young age, Lemaria knew she wanted to create a support system for youth in her area. “Growing up in Nottoway, a lot of us fall victim to the streets. Kids were punished for what they did but rarely asked why they did it. I feel like youth, especially juveniles, can be misunderstood” she says. As a forensic social work major, Lemaria blends academic knowledge with lived experience. Dream Beyond the Blocks was born from a desire to step in and be the big sister, the safe space she knew others needed. “So many young people in Nottoway are stuck. Not because they don't have dreams, but because they don't have access. With no mentors and very few college tours, it's easy to fall short.”

Faith Over Fear

Starting something so bold came with internal hurdles. “I was afraid,” she admits. “Afraid people would think I was trying to be funny, like I didn't come from the same struggle. That fear of being misunderstood almost held me back.” But with prayer, and the support of  her mom, Lemaria stepped out on faith. “Knowing this is beyond me, that I have the ability to change lives and put Nottoway on the map keeps me going.”

One of the most powerful moments came when she decided to share her vision publicly. “I didn't expect people to see the dream the way I did. The support was overwhelming. That's been the most rewarding part.” She goes on to say, “To any student who feels unsure of what’s possible: your life is not limited to what you see around you.”

Lemaria’s journey is far from over, but she’s already witnessing the impact of her courage and calling. “Honestly, I’m already living my dream. I always wanted to be someone my community could look up to. I wanted to help people dream beyond the blocks.”
